On a balmy midsummer's evening in 1923, a young woman - foreign, dishevelled, and heavily pregnant - is found unconscious just off the railway tracks in the tiny logging community of Woody Creek. The town midwife, Gertrude Foote, is roused from her bed when the woman is brought to her door. Try as she might, Gertrude is unable to save her, but the baby lives.
When no relatives come forth to claim the infant, Gertrude's daughter, Amber - who has recently lost a son in childbirth - and her husband, Norman, take the child in. In the ensuing weeks, Norman becomes convinced that God has sent the baby to their door, and in an act of reckless compassion and lonely desperation, he names the baby Jennifer and registers her in place of his son.
Loved by some but scorned by more, including her stepmother and sister, Jenny survives her childhood and grows into an exquisite and talented young woman. But who were her parents? And why does she so strongly resemble an old photograph of Gertrude's philandering husband?
Spanning two momentous decades and capturing rural Australia's complex and mysterious heart, Pearl in a Cage is the new novel by one of our most talented storytellers.
Pearl in a Cage (Audible Audio Edition) Joy Dettman Deidre Rubenstein Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books
I loved this book. It was so nice to read something by an Australian author. Set in the 1930's this book is not something that I would normally pick up to read howerver I was travelling overseas and needed some material for a 10 hour flight. I was looking in the airport bookstore when I cam accross the No 5 novel and thought hey why not start a series. There are many characters in this book, some charming, some warm your heart and others you can't help but hate but nonetheless anyone will find a character relatable to them.
Joy Dettman writes in a way that makes it very hard to stop until you get to the end. This book is quite a lengthy read and I basically couldn't put it down for the flight. Once I had finished I was itching to start the second novel.
I like that the plot takes you on a journey in all different directions and has you so invovled that you feel you are in Woody Creek living in the 1930's and all the different subplots eventually all make sense and come together.

Pearl in a Cage (Audible Audio Edition) Joy Dettman Deidre Rubenstein Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books Reviews
Loved this book--and have purchased and read the next 3 in the series
and eagerly await no 5--due early 2013 apparently.
Had a friend suggest that I might enjoy Joy Dettmans "Pearl in a Cage" and will be forever
gratefull to her .Joy's characters have such depth that they become like old friends and Woody Creek
feels like your own hometown. I read untill my eyes were aching and more!!!
Thankyou Joy Dettman
A good story, however I thought a bit laboured, didn't love it. I also found myself losing track of who some of the characters were, making it necessary to keep going back.
Enjoyed this book and would recommend this book. A wonderful Australian novel set just after the second world war. Well done to Joy Dettman
A fantastic story. Make sure you have the next book ready to read. The book ends up in the air. Leaving the reader searching for the next book to find out what happens.
love the Aussie humour throughout all the Dettman novels) I found myself laughing, and then I felt like crying. I actually re lived some moments. True to reality in the family this writing centers about...the sadness, the almost oppressive life style, love and sheer determination of some of the characters makes this whole series a very worthwhile and enjoyable read! Excellent! highly recommend!
THIS BOOK IS A NARRATED SOAPIE IN PRINT. IT WAS COMPELLING READING ABOUT FAMILIES & THEIR CHILDREN IN OUTBACK VICTORIA. THE WRITING REMINDED ME SOME WHAT OF JANE AUSTIN.
This is a great read. I love the way Joy Dettman weaves her story lines, they really get me in! I read this novel while I was touring, every time we stopped for a break, out it would come, and great to read on the plane and while waiting In airports. I ordered the second in the series while I was still reading the first, which is a great idea, because then the continuity is not lost, and the story just continues to unfold.
I have read a few of Joy Detrman's novels, and have loved them all. She really knows how to get the reader involved in the lives of her characters. I intend to read all of this series, and any others I may have missed. Buy these books, and Enjoy! I would have given it more stars if it that was an option!
